The name "Akizuki" comes from the fact that it is harvested in autumn (Aki 秋) and its shape is round like the moon (Tsuki 月). It has the sweetness of Kosui, the juiciness of Hosui, and the longevity of Niitaka, and its beautiful appearance has earned it a high reputation at pear competitions.
Japan has over 50 varieties of pears (70% are "Kosui" and "Hosui"). The "Akizuki" variety is a reddish-brown pear created from the crossbreeding of "Niitaka", Hosui", and "Kosui" pears and registered as a variety in 2001. It has a fruitier aroma than most pears and requires high skill to cultivate.
